Emotion-adaptive Systems

Ivo Benke

Overview

AI-based, digital technologies will shape the way we work, learn, and live. We collaborate via digital platforms like MS Teams and Slack, meet with zoom, and use Mixed Reality to interact virtually. This will change our traditional work activities. Further, we will learn with learning management systems and apps. Artificial intelligence will provide us with an intelligent experience and integrate these applications into continous environments.
While we change our activities, this has also impact on human emotions. Their handling in these environments is challenging with complex emotional experiences. This can lead to negative effects on the personal performance, collaboration, and well-being.
However, AI technologis provide us with the opportunity to recognize human emotions via human expressions such as text, speech, or biosignals. We can leverage this emotional information to support humans in their digital work and learning activities. Therefore, design emotion-adaptive systems that understand and adapt to emotions during collaboration and learning activities in digital environments.

To design emotion-adaptive systems we leverage biosignal signal sensor technologies as well as AI-based technologies to understand emotional processes. Based on these, we design adaptation mechanisms in emotion-adaptive systems for higher productivity and well-being of humans in hybrid work and learning.

In our research, we focus on the following areas:

  • Emotional competence development and emotion regulation strategies
  • Collaboration, Leadership and autonomy support
  • Self-regulated learning
  • (Conversational) crowd work

Research Activities

Emotion-adaptive Systems for Emotional Competence Development

We design emotion-adaptive systems for emotional competence development in video meetings and group chats. Examples are text- and speech-based emotion-adaptive chatbots or the retrospective competence development dashboard for video meetings, TeamSpiritous.

Leadership & Autonomy in Hybrid Work

Leadership is a core competence for successful teamwork. We apply emotion-adaptive capabilities to support leaders in virtual team meetings and develop conversational crowdworking applications to provide crowdworkers an improved experience.

To balance downsides which come with the involvemnet of AI-based systems, we develop design features for emotion-adaptive system to overcome humans' fear of a lack of autonomy.

Adaptive Systems for Emotional Regulation in Self-regulated Learning

Self-regulated learning has become a key competence for individuals (both in education and work) to succeed in learning. In our ongoing research, we investigate the effects of emotions in the self-regulated learning process by using physiological devices (e.g., wearables, EEG).
