The human-centered systems lab (h-lab) headed by Prof. Dr. Alexander Maedche (research group “Information Systems I", formerly ISSD) focuses in research, education, and innovation on designing human-centered systems for better work & life.
Our mission is to create impactful knowledge for designing human-centered systems for human productivity and well-being through relevant and rigor scientific research. We leverage advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and biosignal sensor technologies and follow a socio-technical research paradigm for increasing human productivity and well-being through human-centered systems.
We contribute to the fields of human-computer interaction (HCI) (Mensch-Computer Interaktion) and information systems (IS) (Wirtschaftsinformatik). We believe that delivering cutting-edge knowledge and inspiring education, as well as an ongoing dialog with the public need to go hand in hand to maximize the impact of our work in organizations and society.

The end of the winter semester 2022/23 also marks the successful end of this year’s Business Intelligence Systems (BIS) capstone project, which is an integral element of the BIS master lecture held by Prof. Dr. Alexander Mädche, Dr. Ulrich Gnewuch, and Jonas Gunklach . The capstone project is tended to empower students to collect hands-on experiences in applying Business Intelligence & Analytics (BI&A) technologies and systems to real-world data and in parallel build up transferrable skills (e.g., communication, team collaboration, etc) The overall goal and topic of the capstone project was to create innovative analytical solutions supporting data-driven decision making at Bosch.mehr
As of today, our new course FORES - Foundations of HCI and IS Research, is available to all KIT students on ILIAS. The goal of the course is to get students up to speed with all important methods, tools, and best practices in the research domains of HCI and IS. As with its predecessor DORIS, the course is mandatory for all registered thesis students at h-lab.mehr
The journal Management Information Systems Quarterly (MISQ) was established in 1977 and is considered as the top outlet in the information systems discipline.

Psychology & Marketing has published a new paper titled “Brand Placements in Video Games: How local in-game experiences influence brand attitudes” by Moritz Ingendahl, Tobias Vogel, Michaela Wänke, Alexander Maedche. We investigate when and how brand placements in video games influence brand attitudes and show that evaluative conditioning and its cognitive mechanisms can be utilized to explain and predict advertising effects.

We welcome Elias Müller as new team member and doctoral researcher in the human-centered systems lab of Prof. Mädche at IISM.
Elias received his B. Sc in Industrial Engineering & Management at DHBW and his M. Sc in Mathematics in Economics at KIT. His research is focused on biosignal sensor technologies in combination with machine learning and the design of user-adaptive systems.

We welcome Kirsten Greiner as new team member and doctoral researcher in the human-centered systems lab of Prof. Mädche at IISM.
Kirsten received her B. Sc in Information Systems from University of Stuttgart and her M. Sc in Information Systems from University of Hohenheim. Her research is focused on emotion-adaptive systems in the context of HR/recruiting.

The International Journal of Human - Computer Studies (IJHCS) has accepted the paper “Ladderbot - A Conversational Agent for Human-like Online Laddering Interviews” co-authored by Tim Rietz and Alexander Maedche for publication. In this study we propose and evaluate Ladderbot, a text-based conversational agent (CA) capable of facilitating human-like online laddering interviews. We find that participants interacting with Ladderbot in average produce twice as many and about 30% longer answers.mehr
