Multimodal COVID-19 DashboardsDashboards became very popular during the COVID-19 pandemic to help people better understand the spread of the virus. But dashboards are complex user interfaces and less tech-savvy users may struggle to access the information they need. Why not give users the opportunity to use both mouse and natural language to navigate the dashboard?

Conversational Assistance in Forecasting Support SystemsAccurate forecasting decisions are important for many supply chain-based companies. However, decision makers often tend to trust their own beliefs more than advice from forecasting support systems (FSS), which prepare forecasts and support the forecasting process. Therefore, we explore how providing conversational assistance can help decision makers better understand the FSS and its forecasts in order to make more accurate forecasting decisions.

Interactive Task Learning for Natural Language Interfacesof Data Visualization ToolsNatural language interfaces (NLIs) are increasingly shifting away from a one-size-fits-all design by allowing end users to teach NLIs how to correctly perform their natural language (NL) inputs (e.g., Siri, Google Assistant). With our ONYX we investigate how the promising concept of interactive task learning (ITL) can be utilized to enable end users to teach NLIs. ITL-based systems are inspired by how we teach humans new tasks and do not require end users to familiarize themselves with a programming language.

Designing Guidance Systems in Business Intelligence & AnalyticsToday’s organizations rely on BI&A to make smarter and faster decisions. BI&A refers to all techniques, technologies, systems, and applications that analyze critical business and market and make timely business decisions. But to make use of large amounts of data and hence support decision-making, data must be analyzed, and this requires analytical and technical skills on the part of humans. However, while the available data is growing exponentially simultaneously, the number of people with analytical and technical skills is increasing only slowly. Thus, this skill gap puts pressure on the labor market and increases the need for human resources with these skills. Recent research has highlighted several user-related challenges, ranging from problems accessing and using the data to difficulties using the current tools to even issues in interpreting the resulting outcomes due to users’ limited skills. One promising attempt to address these challenges could relate to the concept of guidance. Guidance is a computer-assisted process that aims to actively resolve a skill gap encountered by users. Hereby, guidance can assist users in decision making, problem-solving, and task execution during system use. Therefore, the goal is to develop guidance systems in BI&A that support business users with limited analytical skills when analyzing data.

EnTIS – EnBW Tax Information SystemIn cooperation with EnBW and University of Mannheim, the EnTIS project aims at developing information systems for tax professionals. A major focus is how users can be supported in knowledge intensive tasks and how these users interact with the system. Read more about this project or get in contact
