Lecture Description

Advanced information and communication technologies make Interactive (Information) Systems (IIS) ever-present in the users’ private and business life. They are an integral part of E-Commerce portals or social networking sites as well as at the workplace, e.g. in the form of collaboration portals or analytical dashboards.
With the ever-increasing capabilities of computers, the design of human-computer interaction is becoming increasingly important. The aim of this course is to introduce the foundations, related theories, key concepts, and design principles as well as current practice of contemporary Interactive (Information) Systems. The students get the necessary knowledge to guide the successful implementation of Interactive (Information) Systems in business and private life.
 

Lecture Objectives

The students will:

  • know what Interactive (Information) Systems are and how they can be conceptualized
  • explore the theoretical grounding of Interactive (Information) Systems leveraging theories from reference disciplines such as psychology
  • know key concepts and design principles of specific classes of Interactive (Information) Systems (e.g., cooperative & social or conversational IIS)
  • get hands-on experience in conceptualizing and designing Interactive (Information) Systems to solve a real-world challenge from an industry partner by applying the lecture contents.

Lecture Content

  • Conceptual and theoretical foundations of Interactive (Information) Systems
  • Key Design Principles of Interactive (Information) Systems (e.g., perception and navigation, visual interface design, help & support, assistance)
  • Cooperative and Social Interactive (Information) Systems (e.g., computer-supported cooperative work, social computing)
  • UX-Aware Interactive (Information) Systems (e.g., nudging, persuasive systems, attention-aware systems, affective computing)
  • Conversational Interactive (Information) Systems (e.g., chatbots, digital assistants, social cues)

Complementing the lecture, students will work in teams on a capstone project in cooperation with a industry partner. Shortly the partner of this year's capstone project will be announced. In the course of the project students will work out a concrete problem. By applying the contents of the lecture, the student teams develop an Interactive (Information) Systems concept and a prototype to solve this problem.
